On June 20th at 4:00 PM, we invite you to join us for Resettlements' second annual World Refugee Day event, held in partnership with Greyfriars Church, Reading—a church dedicated to sanctuary.
This special event is an opportunity to honor the resilience and creativity of refugees and asylum seekers, and to celebrate the rich cultural diversity they bring to our community.
Art Exhibit and Global Delicacies
The evening will begin with an inspiring art exhibit showcasing the works of refugee and asylum artists. Their pieces tell powerful stories of their journeys, struggles, and hopes. As you explore the exhibit, you can enjoy a delightful array of canapés and drinks from around the globe, offering a taste of the diverse cultures that make up our world.
Insightful Discussions
The event will be hosted by Maggie Fillipova-Rivers and will feature a discussion panel with experts and individuals with lived experiences. Our distinguished panelists include:
Reading Deputy Mayor, Dr. Alice Mpofu-Coles, who brings her extensive experience in community advocacy and public service.
Bashir Fatehi, is an accomplished strategic leader with over 16 years of extensive experience in the government and public sectors, specializing in policy development, international advocacy, and portfolio/program management. As a refugee who came to the UK post-August 2021, Bashir's personal journey fuels his passion for supporting migrant communities.
Ahmad Reshad Walizadi, a refugee from Afghanistan due to personal circumstances and is currently completing his graduate studies at the London School of Economics, who will share his personal journey of resilience and hope.
Mahdi Zangene, also a refugee coming to share his experience and hope for the future.
These speakers will share their unique perspectives, strengths, and hopes, providing invaluable insights into the lives of refugees and the challenges they face.
Cultural Performances
Following the panel discussion, we will be treated to performances by the Ukrainian Choir and Dance Groups, among other talented guests. Their performances will not only entertain but also highlight the rich cultural traditions and artistic talents of refugee communities.
Donations and Support
While donations are suggested, they are not required to attend and enjoy this evening of celebration. All contributions will directly support refugees and asylum seekers involved in this event, as well as a donation to Greyfriars Church, a beacon of sanctuary in our city.
Join us for an evening of art, culture, and community, and help us celebrate “Our Home.” This event is more than just a gathering; it's a testament to the strength, diversity, and unity of our community.
We look forward to seeing you there and sharing this unforgettable experience with you.
